FLC November 2022 - New Wave USA
At WineLab, we are proud of our unique and extensive offering of wines from the USA, and more specifically, California. Thanks to its vast population, many wines made in the US rarely leave its borders. It’s a lengthy process to get US wines into Ireland, but one that we feel is worth it. As a nod to that most American of holidays in November, Thanksgiving, we wanted to showcase some of our favourite Californian wines with our FLC members.
There's a lot of reason to love Californina wines, here's one of ours:
More Than Winemaking
California’s wine scene has always been at the forefront of the biggest trends and movements in US wine. While many renowned Californian winemakers have turned to the grape varieties, vineyard practices, and winemaking techniques of Europe, California leads the way when it comes to considering winemaking and the wine industry’s role in their local communities.
It’s becoming more typical for winemakers to focus on the environmental impact of their wine (which is brilliant!) However, what is relatively new, is to see winemakers such as Kenny Likitprakong and Steve & Jill Matthiasson, prioritising the people who work for and with them. Historically, a lot of work on the winery in California was conducted by underpaid, seasonal migrant workers. However, you’re starting to see a greater focus on the people who make the wine we love possible. In an incredibly competitive and challenging business climate, it is commendable to see such a shift towards making the Californian wine industry sustainable in every sense. This is the tip of the iceberg, but we feel one of the most important areas of change that California is taking the charge in.
